Jane Hoppin, professor of biological sciences, is the recipient of the 2021 James E. Holshouser Jr. Award for Excellence in Public Service.

Dr. Hoppin is an internationally recognized environmental epidemiologist known for her work on how human health can be affected by environmental contaminants, with a focus on respiratory disease related to pesticide exposure. She has conducted innovative research in environmental epidemiology and established significant research and training collaborations in North Carolina.

Among her accomplishments, she initiated the GenX Exposure Study in 2017 in response to health concerns about drinking water contamination from GenX and other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in two regions of North Carolina. With her team, she sought to address this contamination in a watershed that affects millions of North Carolinians.

With funding from the National Institutes of Health and the NIEHS Superfund Research Program at NC State, she recruited individuals from the area and collected data through surveys and blood samples to address pressing questions about exposure to these substances and their long-term health effects.

Dr. Jane is a faculty member at North Carolina State University, part of the graduate program in toxicology and environmental health sciences, and the associate director of the university's Center for Human Health and the Environment. She is also Co-Principal Investigator of the "Sustain and Enrich the Infants and Environmental Health Program" (ISA) R024 ES028526 www.isa.una.ac.cr, co-funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the United States.
